The Good Shepherd - Psalm 23

"The Good Shepherd " - A brief Bible Study on Psalm 23  by Mike Winch

The nation and the world was stunned!

I heard it on the 7 a.m. news on Sunday 31 August, "Diana, Princess of Wales is dead".
As the news of Diana's death unfolded, it evoked shock, personal grief and national mourning. People expressed their emotional response in many ways. Although most never met Diana, her death brought a great sense of loss. I detected something else. People needed someone who loved and cared for them, as Diana had for those side-lined by society. I want to share briefly about Someone who does so always "Jesus Christ who said "I am the good Shepherd." (John 10:11 & 14). In Psalm 23, we see this:"

THE GOOD SHEPHERD GOES BEFORE US.

The Psalm opens by saying, "The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul." (vs.1-3a). In the difficulties, trials and disappointments of life, Jesus has been there before us. It is He alone who is able to lead us through, to restore us and to give us deep inner peace as we trust in Him. "He guides me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake." (v.3b).

THE GOOD SHEPHERD WALKS BESIDE US.

These are tremendous words; "Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for you are with me: your rod and staff, they comfort me". (v'4). In times of sadness and bereavement, the promise is that the Good Shepherd is beside us!

THE GOOD SHEPHERD FOLLOWS BEHIND US.

He directs us into the place of deliverance and abundance. "You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil: my cup overflows. Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever." (vs. 5-6). Will you not accept the offer of  The Good  Shepherd, to take you just as you are, to go before you, to walk beside you and come behind you into His provision and His eternal presence in Heaven. He alone is the way to Heaven.
