Psalm 139 is absolutely packed with memorable phrases. As you read it today, you may have felt as though you were wrapping yourself in an old, familiar, comforting blanket.
Why is it that so many of the ideas and words in this psalm have found their way into our memories? Perhaps it is because this psalm is the ultimate in being ‘known’ by God. In so many ways, human beings live their lives in a quest to be fully known and understood. It’s a need that threads its way through all of our relationships.
We may struggle to find another human being who we feel can truly know and understand us, but this psalm assures us that God himself knows us utterly and completely. He knows where we are, what we are doing, how we are feeling, what we are thinking. There is nowhere we can go where we are not known by God. Wherever we go on earth, he is there. Even before we were born, he was there, knowing every part of us intimately.
We never need to explain ourselves to God, never need to wonder whether he truly understands us. He created our inmost being. In God we are fully known and fully understood. In a world where it can be hard to make real connections with others, it is a privilege and a joy to know that there is someone who knows us better than we know ourselves.
While laying ourselves bare before another human can perhaps leave us feeling vulnerable, there is no need for caution before the Lord. His plans for us are only for our good. We can feel completely safe with him so that, with David, we can confidently say, “Search me God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.” Allow yourself to be fully known by almighty God!
Meditation verse: How precious to me are your thoughts, God! How vast is the sum of them!
