There are some figures of the Old Testament who had the Holy Spirit dwelling within them. Joshua was one of these people.
In these verses, Moses is coming to the end of his life, and he asks the Lord to appoint a new leader for the Israelites who will lead them out of the wilderness and bring them into the land so that they will not be like sheep without a shepherd.
Joshua is the man the Lord has chosen for the task. Notice that Joshua already has the Holy Spirit within him. God did not give Joshua the Holy Spirit so that he could be a leader, he chose him to be a leader because he already had the Holy Spirit.
It is true that the Lord sometimes gave the Holy Spirit to an individual so that they could perform a specific task. Othniel is an example of this. Judges 3:10 tells us that, “The Spirit of the Lord came upon him and he judged Israel.” So the Holy Spirit could fall on specific people for specific times and events. He could also be withdrawn – Saul is an example of this happening.
However, with Joshua, the Holy Spirit was already in him, and that is why he was the best man for the job of leading Israel. If we wish to be those who God can use, we need also to be people who are already filled with the Spirit before he makes the call on our lives. We need to be ready to serve!
Lord God, I ask today that you would fill me with your Holy Spirit, so that I would be prepared to respond to your call, and ready to complete the good works you have prepared in advance for me to do. May I always be ready to serve when I hear your voice.
