Matthew 5:43-48 - Unending and Uncompromising love by Karen Cowling

Love! Love in the English language is one word for so many things. We love food, we love our family, and we love our husbands, wives, boyfriends, or girlfriends. We love books, or TV programs, even football teams or other sports. But these are all different kinds of love. However the love of God cannot compare to any level of love we may have for these things. God loved us so much that Romans 5:8 says: Ď...while we were still sinners Christ died for usí It then continues in verses 9 and 10 to say: Ď Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from Godís wrath through him! For if, while we were Godís enemyís we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!í

So in view of what God has done for us while we were His enemies we can look at what Jesus says in Matthew 5:43-48 about how we should love our enemies.

Jesus tells us that no longer should we think how the world thinks and fight our enemies with hate. No, we need to love them, and pray for them. We need to show Godís level of love to people who would consider us their enemy and in doing so we show that we are children of God. In a world filled with hate and revenge it is love, compassion and mercy that stands out! This is something we as children of God need to be an example of. With the recent events in Manchester I can honestly say that thankfully it is the wonderful, loving, caring things that people have done that the media has focused on the most at this time. This is how we need to be!

It is through our love for each other and for those who persecute us that the church can stand out and show a hurting world, a God who loves them. You need to clothe yourself with compassion and mercy. I am not saying that we should not allow ourselves to get upset, in fact we are told to mourn with those who mourn! But we are to be an example of Godís love and forgiveness. Always ready to give a reason for the hope that we have.

So today, pray, thank God for his love that while you were against him he reached out to you and brought salvation and pray for those who still do not know Godís love and salvation. Pray also for the words to say or things to do so you can share Godís love with people around you.
