Ultimately, how we see Jesus will affect how we serve Jesus.
So, who does John say Jesus was and is?
He is the Word, the Word that created and that creates;
He has always been God;
He is the light of men: the true light, which enlightens every man;
Through Him the world was made... and through receiving Him, we are given the right to become children of God;
He was the Word become flesh, the Son of Man;
He is glorious and is full of grace and truth.
Through Him we receive grace upon grace;
He is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world;
He is the one who baptizes in the Holy Spirit;
He is the Son of God, the Messiah, the Christ, the Anointed One!
That's quite a list from only one chapter... It will be a handy identity list to bear in mind as we read on through the Gospel according to John.
Lastly, at the close of the chapter, He is the one who calls men and women to follow Him!
"Yes, I chose to follow a long time ago," you may say. But those who followed Him, here in John chapter 1, immediately refer to Jesus as Rabbi, or teacher. He's still that and I would say, and challenge you to agree, that we all still have lots to learn from Him!
"Lord Jesus, as we choose to follow you, please grant understanding and insight into Your Word by the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, such that we would know who you are more and more. Teach us your ways we ask Lord, amen."
