In John chapter 14 Jesus has lots to say about the Holy Spirit and his operations in our lives. The Holy Spirit has plenty of job descriptions; you could say he is a friend of ‘many hats’. Jesus makes this promise in John 14:15-17: If you love me, you will obey what I command. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you for ever – the Spirit of truth.
The first ‘job description’ of the helper who would come to us, if we love and obey the Lord Jesus, seems to be a very broad one. It is variously translated as: advocate, helper, comforter, counsellor, strengthener and standby! That covers an awful lot of situations in which we might have a need of help. In fact, I wonder why we don’t invite him more often to take charge of the situations in our lives, since he is the One who is ready and waiting to stand in our defence, help, guide and strengthen us, and stand by us when no one else does.
Here’s another ‘hat’ he wears: the Spirit of Truth (v17). Anytime we face confusion, feel tossed about by the opinions of others, by the messages being shouted at us by the world, we can turn to Him because he is the Spirit of Truth. He will only tell us what is right and true. He will dip into Jesus and show him to us.
In verse 26 there’s another ‘hat’ he wears, that of teacher and reminder. He teaches us what we need to know, he brings the Scriptures alive to us, giving us fresh revelation about the meaning of the Word of God; and he is in charge of our revision, he reminds us of what we already know but have forgotten.
Give him time to teach you today, put all that’s going on in your life into his hands, ask him for God the Father’s perspective on your life, and let him fill you with the joy and peace of the Lord Jesus.
