“Let us look only to Jesus, the One who began our faith and who makes it perfect. He suffered death on the cross. But he accepted the shame as if it were nothing, because of the joy that God put before him. And now he is sitting at the right side of God’s throne. Think about Jesus’ example. He held on while wicked people were doing evil things to him. So, do not get tired and stop trying.” Hebrews 12:2-3 (NCV)
As we move along the path that God has for us, and start to remove the bad things in our lives, with the power to defeat sin that we have through Christ, people will come against us. Once you decide to follow Christ the enemy will try to find ways to drag you back. One main way is to persecute us. People will mock, they may say things or do things to make you feel bad and that your decision to follow Christ is a wrong one.
In these two verses we are reminded that even when people come against us and try and trip us up or make us feel wrong in our decision to follow Christ, Jesus himself went through persecution, even up to the point of death. However, through all the trouble and pain, Jesus continued as he knew that it was all worth it, and he is now, after being resurrected and taken up into heaven, sat at the right hand of God.
Lord Jesus, thank you again that you did not back down and that you died on the cross to save me from my sin. Please help me to face any persecution with boldness and strength as you did as you faced the reality of the cross. I ask this in your name Jesus. Amen
