We people have an element of faith, however it's where we place the faith that counts. Hebrews 11:1 tells us that '...faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.' So what is the hope we are sure of? The hope of eternal life; the hope that when this life ends, be it in physical death or Jesus' return, we have a hope that we will stand before God and have our name in the book of life. If you want to further that, we hope that God will say: 'Well done good and faithful servant'.
What is that which we do not see yet are certain of? Well for us post Jesus' ascension it's that Jesus walked the earth, was crucified, and rose from the dead. Jesus himself said to Thomas: "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed." Also we are certain that the future holds Jesus' return and so the end of this torn world.
These are not the only things to hope for and to be sure of when it comes to God, however I find them key when thinking about what faith is. Hebrews 11 then goes on to list the 'Heroes of Faith', men and women of God who even though they may not have seen the promises God made to them fulfilled in their lifetime they put their faith in Him and so it was credited to them as righteousness.
Faith is a gift, and as born again followers of Jesus we need to put our faith in Him. Sometimes however if we have continuous struggles or something big happens we may feel we don't have the faith to see it through. But God allows us to ask for more of His gift of faith, in fact he will happily give you as much faith as you need. He asks only one thing in return; and that is that we put our faith in Him. Not in ourselves, as we can never achieve eternal life on our own merit, but only by faith in Jesus. So don't be afraid to ask for a little more faith today, God may just have a mountain for you to move.
