Acts 1 - Be Witnesses

Over the next few weeks we are going to make our way through the book of Acts. The Acts of the Apostles is an amazing book! It speaks of the coming of the Holy Spirit, the spreading of the Gospel and salvation being available for all people, whether Jew or Gentile.

Today we are going to centre our focus on Acts 1:8. It says “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Just previous to this verse, in verse 6, the disciples had been enquiring about the timing of the kingdom of Israel being restored. However in verse 7, Jesus responds by saying “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority.” And then we get Jesus’ final promise and instruction in verse 8. The people were focusing on the wrong thing; they were focusing and questioning things that were outside of their control, something that had been set by the Father by his own authority. They didn’t need to worry about times and dates!

However, Jesus realigns there focus in verse 8. When the Holy Spirit comes, they will receive power, and they are to be His witnesses! That was to be their focus, to be His witnesses. And the result of receiving the power of the Holy Spirit is that they would become witnesses of Jesus, and all over the earth.

We too today are called to be witness of Jesus Christ to the world around us. How is it that we are able to be the most effective witness? Acts 1:8 makes it clear for me! To be filled with the Holy Spirit, and to go out in the power of the Holy Spirit. It is then that we will be the most effective witness to the world around us.

So let me encourage you today, don’t be focusing on the wrong things, or the things out of your control. Instead receive the power of the Holy Spirit, walk in the life of the Spirit, and be that effective witness of Christ Jesus.
